Rope and Oudewater go hand in hand. At the charming Rope Museum, you’ll discover the story of this age-old craft. The museum is located in an authentic rope barn (“baanschuur”) on Reijersteeg, right in the historic centre of Oudewater. For centuries, hemp was stored and rope was made here – and you can still feel that history today.
Craftmanship and history brought to life
The museum features old tools, traditional equipment, and a real ropewalk machine from the G. van der Lee Rope Factory. You can even make your own skipping rope – a fun way to experience the craft hands-on. The barn is one of a kind: it’s the last original rope barn of its kind in the Netherlands.

The Rope Museum is also great for kids. They can make their own rope, dress up as pirates, and play aboard a large wooden ship built on the upper floor. Across from the museum, there’s a small playground all about rope. A fun and educational outing for the whole family!
