The Centraal Museum is your gateway to art and culture from the world of Utrecht. From Rietveld to the Utrecht Caravaggists, from Dick Bruna to Moesman and from Viktor & Rolf to the centuries-old Utrecht ship. A museum which leaves you inspired time after time. The museum has been housed in this medieval cloister on the Nicolaaskerkhof since 1921 and currently consists of an eclectic collection of buildings with a large courtyard at their centre. It’s a lovely place to wander through hallways and stairwells, and where you can be surprised by the various exhibitions.
Collection
The museum has the largest collection of Rietveld pieces in the world, and shows the work of the world-famous Dick Bruna. The collection of old art is also worthwhile with work from Jan van Scorel, Abraham Bloemaert and Hendrick ten Brugghen. Besides the work of those Dutch icons, the Centraal Museum provides a broad overview of 2.000 years turbulent history, is also the ‘present’ a central theme with current fashion, design and visual art are high on the agenda.Studio Dick Bruna
A special part of the Central Museum is the studio of Dick Bruna, one of the Netherlands’ most famous illustrators and graphic designers. For the last 30 years of his career, he worked at his studio in the centre of Utrecht daily. This was where he created his illustrations and stories, surrounded by personal memories, photos of memorable encounters, gifts from fans and letters from fellow artists.Online tickets

Somewhat hidden in the woods along Gedekte Gemeenschapsweg between Fort Honswijk and Werk aan de Korte Uitweg is the small but atmospheric Lunet aan de Snel. The earthen rampart allowed defenders to repel an attack on Fort Honswijk from the north-east. In addition, its guns covered parts of the Lekdijk – something that could not be achieved from Fort Honswijk.
These days, the fort houses an exhibition that illustrates the key role that water plays in our community and its unique properties.

Hubrecht van Vianen founded a chapel in the 13th Century. It fell under the mother church in Hagestein and began growing fast. In the year 1345, it became a parish church and was granted marriage and burial rights. For this, a sum of money had to be paid to the church in Hagestein annually. In the 14th Century, the chapel was replaced by a single-nave church. In the year 1433, following a feud between Vianen and Hagestein, the Bishop of Utrecht decided to split the two churches.
In the mid-15th Century, the church was replaced by a 3-aisle Gothic hall church which is the same size as the current church. (Including the tower, it’s 77.5 metres long, 43 metres wide and 41 metres high.) Since the church also contains the family graves of the Lords of Vianen, it was required to match the grand status of the Brederodes in terms of its size and appearance.
After a fire in the year 1540, the church (de Grote Kerk) was rebuilt in its current form almost immediately (as a combination of a hall church and cruciform church) with the support of Reinoud III van Brederode. The church became Reformed under his son, Hendrik van Brederode. On 25 September 1566, the Roman Catholic institution disappeared and then, on 1 October, the first Protestant service was held.

The Old Harbour, also known as the Harbour Museum, dates back to the 13th century. This harbour was built for the ships operated by the Zuiderzee fishermen.
Tap into the history of the fishing village of Spakenburg. Pay a visit to the museum harbour, where culture and traditions come together. Here you’ll find the oldest shipyard in the Netherlands where shipwrights are still hard at work every day, maintaining the world’s biggest fleet of ‘botters’, a special type of wooden, flat-bottomed fishing boat.
In the port of Spakenburg, you'll experience both culture and tradition. The jewel of Spakenburg's port – a museum in its own right – is the oldest shipyard in the Netherlands. From the port, you can see the shipbuilders at work. One-third of the entire Dutch fleet is moored at Spakenburg and you are welcome to come aboard!.
You can enjoy a one-hour sailing trip on a botter while listening to stories from the past, as the skipper lets you relax on the water

In 1870, the Kromme Rijn was given a key role in the New Dutch Waterline. Back then, it took almost a month to flood the area around Utrecht. This had to be speeded up. To this end, the river was widened, its bends were straightened and locks and dams were built. Near Wijk bij Duurstede, a large inundation lock was built that made Wijk bij Duurstede the ‘tap’ with which to turn on the New Dutch Waterline. This reduced the time needed to flood the inundation areas to between 4 and 12 days. The inlet is still used daily to transport fresh water to the city of Utrecht and the river Vecht.

Goejanverwelle lock
The Goejanverwelle lock and the Enkele Wiericke lock on the Hollandse Ijssel played a key role in the Disaster Year. Together with the lock at Nieuwerbrug on the Oude Rijn, they formed the inlet to the Langeweide polder, which was the narrowest section of the Waterline. The locks were opened on 17 June 1672 – just in time to halt the advance of the French, who had already captured Oudewater and marched right up to the edge of the hastily flooded Waterline. With great promptitude, the commander of the garrison at Goejanverwelle, the Count of Horn, gave the order to raise sconces and fortifications to defend the locks. For the moment, the Waterline was safe!

The gothic Dom Church was built as a cathedral for the bishop of Utrecht and dedicated to St. Maarten.
The interior with many lavishly decorated tombs is impressive. The Dom church draws many people daily for a guided tour or a moment of silence and peace. The free Saturday afternoon concerts (3.30 pm) have been a household word in Utrecht for over thirty years.
