Somewhat hidden in the woods along Gedekte Gemeenschapsweg between Fort Honswijk and Werk aan de Korte Uitweg is the small but atmospheric Lunet aan de Snel. The earthen rampart allowed defenders to repel an attack on Fort Honswijk from the north-east. In addition, its guns covered parts of the Lekdijk – something that could not be achieved from Fort Honswijk.
These days, the fort houses an exhibition that illustrates the key role that water plays in our community and its unique properties.

Walking through the historic trenches of Werk aan de Groeneweg is like a walk back in time. The defence structure still has its original configuration. The infantry set-up in World War One consisted of a double trench with earthen walls, 55 group shelters and lovely fruit trees.
The grounds are a fantastic playground for children. You can have a great time here roaming around, crawling through a trench, playing hide and seek and participating in an exciting search and experience walk of about 2 km, with soldier Vendrik as your guide.

The Centraal Museum is your gateway to art and culture from the world of Utrecht. The museum has the largest collection of Rietveld pieces in the world, and shows the work of the world-famous Dick Bruna. The collection of old art is also worthwhile with work from Jan van Scorel, Abraham Bloemaert and Hendrick ten Brugghen. Besides the work of those Dutch icons, the Centraal Museum provides a broad overview of 2.000 years turbulent history, is also the ‘present’ a central theme with current fashion, design and visual art are high on the agenda.Studio Dick Bruna
A special part of the Central Museum is the studio of Dick Bruna, one of the Netherlands’ most famous illustrators and graphic designers. For the last 30 years of his career, he worked at his studio in the centre of Utrecht daily. This was where he created his illustrations and stories, surrounded by personal memories, photos of memorable encounters, gifts from fans and letters from fellow artists.Online tickets

De Haar Castle is the biggest and most luxurious castle in The Netherlands. It is one of the top European historic houses. This centuries-old long dyke marks the border between the Betuwe to the east and the lowlands to the west. The purpose of the Diefdijk was to protect the lower-lying meadows whenever the higher Betuwe flooded. The dyke was reinforced in 2015 and still serves its purpose today. It was also part of the New Dutch Waterline: the area to the east of the dyke served as an inundation area. To this day, this area remains scarcely built up. Nature reserves of various sizes border the dyke on either side.

The Plofsluis consists of five concrete bins with a relatively weak floor that span the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. The bins could store around 40,000 tonnes of sand, gravel or debris. In wartime, the floor could be blow up, so that its contents would drop into the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal. This would block the canal and prevent the inundation water from flowing out. The lock was designed in such a way that its sides would remain upright after the explosion, so that the floor could be reconstructed and the sluice could be used again. It was never actually used.
