A walk around Zeist Castle

This trail links woodlands and country estates through a number of winding farmland tracks. It takes in such sights as the De Breul estate and its delightful English landscape garden, the Heidestein estate and its sheep pen, and last but not least Zeist Castle. Its first inhabitant was William of Nassau, Lord of Odijk – a grandson of Maurice, Prince of Orange. Leaving Zeist Castle behind, you make your way through the peaceful estates of Wulperhorst and Blikkenberg. The walk also includes the old Forest of Zeist, which boasts a number of Scots pines dating as far back as 1795.

You can start this route at TOP Slot Zeist. A Tourist Transfer Point (TOP) is a starting point where you can leave your car and continue on foot, by bike or by boat. TOPs are easily reached by car and offer ample parking space. A large number of them are located near a hotel, restaurant and/or cafe and some of them have charging points for e-bikes. If you are coming by train, you can also start the route at trainstation Driebergen-Zeist.

The château was built in the French baroque style and is owned by Zeist Town Council. The interior has been adapted as much as possible to the time of its origin (the 17th century), and includes gobelings, large mirrors, furniture and portraits.

The Hernhutter (Moravian Brothers) House

The Hernhutter House Museum Foundation was set up in 2007 by the Community of Moravian Brethren and the Zeist Missionary Society. The foundation held annual exhibitions at different locations.

Heidestein Estate

The Heidestein estate is a lovely location. A herd moorland sheep grazes the meadows among the old pine forests. This is what the Utrechtse Heuvelrug looked like 100 years ago.

While out walking, you will notice how strongly birds are attracted to the overgrowth. If you are lucky, you can spot redstart, tawny owl, goldcrest or marsh tit.

De Boswerf is a magnificent green location in the middle of the Zeisterbos, one of the oldest wooded areas of the Utrechtse Heuvelrug ridge. Children can enjoy themselves in the wonderful play forest and all kinds of activities are held for every age.
