Fort at 't Hemeltje
Fort at 't Hemeltje
Fort 't Hemeltje dates from 1877-1881 and is the last built fort of the New Dutch Waterline. It defended a strip of land that could not be flooded and the 's-Hertogenbosch-Utrecht railway line. Nowadays, Fort bij 't Hemeltje is largely used as office space for various entrepreneurs who are active in the field of sustainability. The fort also offers shelter to (breeding) birds and bats.
There is a walking route around the fort and there is an exciting spy route with fun assignments for children. In addition, the fort is regularly open to the public, for example during Open Heritage Days. Fortweg 11

Dom Church
Dom Church
The gothic Dom Church was built as a cathedral for the bishop of Utrecht and dedicated to St. Maarten.
The interior with many lavishly decorated tombs is impressive. The Dom church draws many people daily for a guided tour or a moment of silence and peace. The free Saturday afternoon concerts (3.30 pm) have been a household word in Utrecht for over thirty years.

Werk aan de Waalse Wetering
This defence work was built in 1875–1878 and comprises a bomb-proof outbuilding and a guardhouse.
In emergencies, it could harbour as many as 95 men.
The fort is freely accessible and boasts uninterrupted views of the island of Schalkwijk. The Verdronken Bos (drowned forest), where a wooden walkway takes you across the water, is a short walk away.

Grebbeberg Military Cemetery
Grebbeberg Military Cemetery
The largest battle of the Dutch army in WWII took place on Grebbeberg Hill. Here poorly armed and untrained men held their ground against a very powerful and ruthless opponent for three days. Grebbeberg Military Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 800 soldiers and 1 citizen who perished here in the Second World War. It is located on Grebbeberg Hill at Rhenen, and was a battlefield of just a few square kilometres, but is full of stories of the courage of desperation in the Netherlands.
The information centre, with an exhibition about the events on Grebbeberg Hill during “The Battle for Grebbeberg Hill” in May 1940, is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Canals and shipyards
Canals and shipyards
The Utrecht canals with their wharves and wharf cellars are unique in the world.
The 12th Century Oudegracht was built to change the course of the Oude Rijn river. Connecting the river Vecht in the north to the Vaartsche Rijn in the south, the Oudegracht was destined to become an elongated harbour. Large city castles were built along the canal and in the 13th Century, shipyards were built as second streets at water level. The deep cellars, serving as storage spaces, ran through to below the houses. Today, the canals and shipyards are home to shops, restaurants and private residences.

Diefdijk
Diefdijk
This centuries-old long dyke marks the border between the Betuwe to the east and the lowlands to the west. The purpose of the Diefdijk was to protect the lower-lying meadows whenever the higher Betuwe flooded. The dyke was reinforced in 2015 and still serves its purpose today. It was also part of the New Dutch Waterline: the area to the east of the dyke served as an inundation area. To this day, this area remains scarcely built up. Nature reserves of various sizes border the dyke on either side.
