Fort Asperen
Fort Asperen
This magnificent tower fort, built between 1845 and 1847, is surrounded by a moat for extra protection. Fort Asperen last saw active use on 12 April 1940, as part of preparations for the coming war. However, the Germans flew straight past it. Fort Asperen, which is an artwork in and of itself, is open to visitors in the summer months. The domed roof to keep out the rain, for instance, is made entirely of glass slates designed in the Glassworks at the National Glass Museum.

The Zouweboezem nature reserve
The Zouweboezem nature reserve
An undiscovered gem, full of beautiful flora and fauna. This storage area was dug in the 14th century to collect the excess water between the polders. Now it is an oasis of peace in which grasslands, reed beds and water alternate. Have your camera ready, because the swamp fields are the home and breeding ground for many bird species. The purple heron, the marsh harrier and the china grouse, you can admire them all.

Boundary posts
Boundary posts
In around 1875, the Ministry of War erected some 350 boundary posts along the length of the Kromme Rijn. The blue stone posts, marked with the letter O (for Oorlog, the Dutch word for war) and a number, marked the new route for transporting water to the New Dutch Waterline. The posts used to line up with plot boundaries. Many have been removed over the years, but the water board has returned 18 of them to their original location along the towpath between Werkhoven and Odijk following the construction of an environmentally friendly riverbank.

Fort Lunet aan de Snel
Fort Lunet aan de Snel
Somewhat hidden in the woods along Gedekte Gemeenschapsweg between Fort Honswijk and Werk aan de Korte Uitweg is the small but atmospheric Lunet aan de Snel. The earthen rampart allowed defenders to repel an attack on Fort Honswijk from the north-east. In addition, its guns covered parts of the Lekdijk – something that could not be achieved from Fort Honswijk.
These days, the fort houses an exhibition that illustrates the key role that water plays in our community and its unique properties.

Grebbeberg Military Cemetery
Grebbeberg Military Cemetery
The largest battle of the Dutch army in WWII took place on Grebbeberg Hill. Here poorly armed and untrained men held their ground against a very powerful and ruthless opponent for three days. Grebbeberg Military Cemetery is the final resting place for more than 800 soldiers and 1 citizen who perished here in the Second World War. It is located on Grebbeberg Hill at Rhenen, and was a battlefield of just a few square kilometres, but is full of stories of the courage of desperation in the Netherlands.
The information centre, with an exhibition about the events on Grebbeberg Hill during “The Battle for Grebbeberg Hill” in May 1940, is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
